Anambra: Police, community leaders synergise over security

Leaders of the Alor Community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State have met with the authorities of the State Police Command over the murder of a 23-year-old female student nurse at her residence in the area.

The meeting centred on ensuring positive strategies and effective collaboration aimed at protecting the lives and property of residents of the community.

This came as operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the command uncovered a hideout of suspected secret cult members in Awada town, Idemili North Local Government Area.

It was learnt that the meeting between Alor community leaders and the command was in connection with the ongoing investigation into the reported murder of the 23-year-old female student nurse at her residence in Alor.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state command, SP Toochukwu Ikenga, disclosed on Saturday that, “The visit was also aimed at supporting the police investigation and ensuring that justice is served.”

He stated that, “During the engagement, the delegation provided useful information to assist investigators and reaffirmed the community’s commitment to collaborating with the police. They also expressed their collective resolve to support all lawful efforts geared towards uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

He added, “The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, during the interactive session, reassured the stakeholders of the command’s commitment to unravelling the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that all persons found culpable are brought to justice in accordance with the law.”

“The CP also urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and provide credible information that may assist the ongoing investigation,” he said.

In his remarks, the President-General of the community, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, commended the police for their prompt response and professionalism in handling the case.

He expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation and pledged the continued cooperation and support of the Alor community towards ensuring a successful outcome.

Ikenga further said, “At Awada, operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the IGP’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), on the evening of June 20, 2026, recovered two AK-47 magazines, 60 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, and other police-related items during a sustained raid on a suspected cultists’ hideout in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.”

According to him, “The police team stormed the notorious black spot known for cult-related activities at Nwaziki Street, Awada.”

“Although no suspect was arrested at the scene, the operatives have commenced investigations to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects, establish ownership of the recovered exhibits, and unravel any criminal network linked to the recovered items,” he added.
