Diaspora group backs Obanikoro as Hamzat campaign DG

A political support group, Lagos Diaspora for Hamzat 2027, has endorsed the appointment of former Minister of State for Defence and ex-Lagos senator, Musiliu Obanikoro, as Director General of the campaign organisation of Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat.
The group described the appointment as a strategic move that would strengthen the campaign’s grassroots mobilisation and political structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Convener, Ayodeji Tinubu, the group said Obanikoro’s vast political experience and deep understanding of Lagos politics make him well-suited for the role.
The group, which comprises Lagosians living in the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, expressed confidence that the former senator would provide the leadership needed to coordinate the campaign effectively.
“This appointment is indeed a classic case of a round peg in a round hole,” Tinubu said.
He noted that Obanikoro’s long record in public service and politics would be an asset to the campaign.
“Senator Obanikoro’s vast political experience, outstanding leadership credentials, strategic thinking, and deep understanding of Lagos politics make him exceptionally qualified for this important responsibility,” he added.
Tinubu also said the group believes Obanikoro’s ability to build consensus and manage diverse political interests would help strengthen support for Hamzat within the All Progressives Congress.
“We are confident that under his leadership, the campaign structure will be strengthened and strategically positioned to deliver the candidacy of Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat to victory at the polls,” Tinubu said.
He further stated that the diaspora group is prepared to support the campaign through its international networks and professional resources.
According to him, members of the organisation are ready to mobilise Lagosians both at home and abroad in support of Hamzat’s political ambition.
“We wish Senator Musiliu Obanikoro a successful tenure as Director General and pray that Almighty God grants him wisdom, strength, and good health as he undertakes this critical assignment,” he said.
Recall that in May, the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State declared Hamzat as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
Chairman of the APC National Governorship Election Committee, Gen. Jon Temlong (retd.), announced the result in the presence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, party leaders and key stakeholders.
He described the exercise by party officials as peaceful and transparent.
