Edo government reopens schools shut over security threat

The Edo State Government has ordered the reopening of schools that were temporarily shut down due to security concerns. The state government had initially closed the schools on June 9, 2026, following intelligence reports about possible security threats in parts of the Edo North Senatorial District.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs Enodolomwanyi Otamere, the government directed affected schools to resume academic activities on June 15, 2026. “The decision to reopen the schools followed a comprehensive review of the security situation by the state government in collaboration with relevant security agencies and other stakeholders,” Otamere said.

The statement added that enhanced security measures have been put in place, and additional safety mechanisms have been deployed across affected communities and schools to ensure the protection of learners, teachers, and other school personnel.

“Consequently, all public and private schools affected by the earlier closure order have been directed to resume normal academic and administrative activities from June 15,” the statement added.

School heads, proprietors, and education authorities have been instructed to make adequate preparations for the safe return of students and staff while maintaining close collaboration with security agencies, community leaders, and government officials to sustain a secure learning environment.

The government urged parents and guardians to ensure their children and wards return to school to continue their academic activities, assuring that measures have been deployed for the safety of the schools.
