The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Enugu has launched an investigation into a self-styled prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, over allegations of fraud amounting to N70,391,600.
The probe was triggered by a petition from Okey Uwakwe, who accused the cleric of exploiting church members through fabricated claims of spiritual power.
Uwakwe alleged that the prophet promised to bring back his brother, who had been abroad since 1997, and to help his childless sister-in-law conceive after 15 years of marriage, with payments of N6,231,400 and N3,251,200 made respectively in connection with these claims.
He further accused the cleric of convincing members that he had won N33 billion in a lottery scheme, encouraging them to contribute funds in expectation of dividends a scheme he said cost him N3,349,000. He also reportedly contributed N500,000 toward an alleged N1 billion rice processing machine investment promoted by the prophet.
In total, Uwakwe claims to have lost N13,331,600 without receiving any benefit.
Investigations have since uncovered broader complaints from other members of the ministry, who allege they were repeatedly pressured into so-called spiritual investment schemes, including the purchase of miracle stickers, spiritual dragon items, and items described as “holy ghost thunder,” sold for N38,000 each, with an estimated 1,000 units reportedly purchased by members.
One member said they were told the items were necessary to combat a spiritual army connected to the alleged lottery win.
The EFCC noted that the suspect’s broader pattern allegedly involved selling religious-themed items under the promise of spiritual or financial prosperity, with several other victims now coming forward with similar accounts.
Ajuluchukwucheya remains under investigation and is expected to be formally charged once the probe is concluded.
