Emir of Zazzau graces intl horse racing derby in Zaria as Yero lauds cultural showcase

The historic Muhammadu Aminu Square in Zaria came alive over the weekend as horse racing enthusiasts, community leaders, and stakeholders converged for the International Horse Racing Derby themed “Renewed Hope Zaria 2026”.

The event, which celebrated the region’s rich equestrian tradition and sporting excellence, drew large crowds and top dignitaries.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, who attended the derby, described the occasion as a “celebration of our rich cultural heritage and sporting excellence.”

A major highlight was the presence of His Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, whose attendance, alongside other distinguished guests, added prestige to the event.

“I was particularly delighted to witness the presence of His Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, alongside other distinguished dignitaries whose attendance added great prestige to the occasion,” Yero said.

The former governor commended the organizers for staging a successful event that continues to promote unity, culture, and development within the society.

Horse racing remains one of Northern Nigeria’s oldest sporting traditions, with Zaria’s derby serving as a key platform for preserving cultural identity while attracting tourism and community engagement.
