Flood Fears Grip Nasarawa Community As Fresh Rainfall Warnings Emerge

As concerns grow over forecasts of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in various parts of the country, the Village Head of Kwanka in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Malam Dogara Muhammad, has called on both the federal and state governments to take preemptive action to shield vulnerable communities from the looming threat of disaster.

The traditional ruler made the appeal while speaking on the persistent flooding challenges that have plagued the community, warning that residents face the prospect of yet another devastating experience if urgent steps are not taken.

He recounted that Kwanka has endured years of destructive flooding, with consequences ranging from loss of lives and destruction of homes to the displacement of entire families.

He specifically recalled a severe flooding incident three years ago triggered by several consecutive days of heavy rainfall in which three community members lost their lives and numerous homes were destroyed, leaving many families homeless and forcing others to flee the area.

Malam Muhammad said residents grew increasingly anxious after hearing recent predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) of intense rainfall and possible flooding across several parts of the country.

He appealed to the government to intervene before another tragedy unfolds, stressing that the community has already suffered too much and cannot afford to go through another such ordeal.

He further explained that repeated flooding over the years has carved deep erosion channels and gullies across the community, causing significant environmental degradation and leaving residents more exposed to danger during the rainy season.

The damaged terrain, he noted, now poses a growing threat to homes, farmlands, roads, and other critical infrastructure in the area.

The traditional ruler urged relevant authorities including emergency management agencies, environmental experts, and disaster response bodies to conduct urgent assessments and put mitigation measures in place to prevent a repeat of past tragedies.

He emphasised that targeted interventions such as drainage construction, erosion control projects, and flood management initiatives would make a significant difference in protecting lives and property.

Community residents have equally voiced their anxiety over the approaching peak of the rainy season, calling on government agencies to act without delay before the situation deteriorates into a full-blown humanitarian crisis.

The appeal comes amid escalating warnings from weather and disaster management authorities about the heightened flooding risk across multiple states as rainfall continues to intensify nationwide.
