Group lauds Tinubu for Abia bridge reconstruction after 58 years

An Abia State-based group, the Ndigbo for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu 2027 Forum, has credited President Bola Tinubu with the reconstruction of the Umuwanwa Bridge in Abia State, saying the intervention marks a major infrastructure milestone nearly six decades after the structure was destroyed during the Nigerian Civil War.

The group said the project, alongside other ongoing federal road works in the Southeast, reflected the administration’s commitment to addressing infrastructure gaps and promoting balanced national development.

In a communiqué issued after its State Executive Committee meeting held on Sunday in Umuahia, the group said the bridge had remained unattended since its destruction in 1967.

“Of historic significance, the forum acknowledges the Federal Government’s approval for the reconstruction of the Umuwanwa Ancient Bridge, destroyed during the Nigerian Civil War in 1967 and left unattended for over five decades,” the statement read.

The communiqué was signed by state chairman, Nwaogazi Nwankwo; state secretary, Anayo Chukwu; and state Public Relations Officer, Ndubuisi Anya.

NDI-ABAT also cited ongoing federal interventions in the region, including rehabilitation work on the Aba–Port Harcourt axis of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

It commended the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for what it described as sustained infrastructure development efforts across the Southeast corridor.

The group urged citizens, particularly new voters, to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate actively in the electoral process.

On the 2027 Abia governorship race, the forum said it had not endorsed any candidate, adding that any future position would follow directives from its national leadership and relevant political structures.

It also announced plans for the 2026 Asiwaju Summit scheduled for Enugu in July next year, which it said would highlight projects of the Tinubu administration in the Southeast and deepen policy engagement.

According to the group, the summit will focus on accountability, policy awareness, and political integration in the region.

The meeting ended with a call for increased political participation by Ndi Igbo to strengthen regional influence and access to federal development opportunities.
