Iconic vinyl retailer set to close after 48 years – famous for its Jimi Hendrix sign

An iconic vinyl shop will close after 48 years, with its owners admitting their once “small business grew into something so much bigger than we ever could have imagined”. The store was known for its rainbow-coloured walls and large painted sign of Jimi Hendrix’s face.
On Monday (June 8), Electric Ladyland confirmed it would shut for good at the end of the month, with bosses taking to social media to announce the news. The store opened in 1978 and sold a range of items, including vinyl records, tapestries, local artwork, and oddities. The shopfront included a large sign of the legendary Jimi Hendrix, who is considered the most influential electric guitarist in rock history.
As reported by The Sun, the shop, based in Louisville, Kentucky, will close at the end of June. Its bosses confirmed the news on social media and thanked customers for their support over the years.
They said on social media: “What began as a small business grew into something so much bigger than we ever could have imagined. Electric Ladyland became a place of connection, creativity, self expression, and community.
“Through changing times, generations of customers walked through our doors, shared their stories, discovered something new, and became part of our family.
“To every customer who shopped with us, every friend who supported us, every employee who helped shape our journey, and every member of this community who believed in us, thank you. Your loyalty, kindness, and encouragement have meant more than words can express.”
After opening in 1978, the vinyl retailer described itself as Louisville’s oldest “hippie store”. It was loved for selling a number of items, including records, artwork and tapestries.
The shop’s website says: “We are an eccentric shop dedicated to Good music & fun oddities! Come in and check us out to get first hand experience of our local artwork covered walls and good music selection!”
It adds: “We are your one stop ‘Hippie Shop’. We are dedicated to providing our customers with high quality and affordable products! We support many local artists and host a wide selection of products made by them!”
