IGP orders increased security around Katsina schools

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the Katsina State Police Command to strengthen security measures around schools across the state to protect students, teachers and educational facilities from security threats.

The directive was conveyed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Sulaiman Abdul, during a two-day operational visit to Katsina State. According to the police, the command has been instructed to increase surveillance, intensify patrols around schools, improve intelligence gathering and maintain a visible security presence at educational institutions throughout the state.

DIG Abdul said the initiative is aimed at preventing criminal activities, enhancing emergency response capabilities and ensuring that schools remain safe environments for learning. As part of the visit, the deputy inspector-general inspected security arrangements at the Police Children School and the Government Girls Technical and Commercial College in Charanchi Local Government Area.

During the assessment, he examined key security infrastructure, including perimeter fencing, entry and exit points, security posts and the deployment of personnel assigned to protect the schools. The DIG also met separately with school administrators and management teams to discuss security concerns and challenges facing the institutions.

The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between educational authorities and security agencies, improving school safety measures and enhancing preparedness against potential threats. Abdul urged school authorities to adopt stricter access-control measures, remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities within and around school premises to security agencies.

Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding educational institutions, the DIG said the police remain dedicated to ensuring that students and teachers can carry out their activities without fear. The directive comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to improve the safety of schools in parts of northern Nigeria that have experienced security challenges, including attacks and abductions targeting educational institutions.
