Kidnappers on the run as Edo Police intensify hunt for abducted woman

BENIN CITY — The Edo State Police Command has intensified efforts to rescue Mrs. Precious Ufure Oseghale, who was abducted near the Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City, assuring residents that significant progress has been made in tracking her captors.

The command said operatives of its Anti-Kidnapping Unit are actively pursuing the suspects and expressed confidence that the victim would be rescued soon.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Moses Yamu, stated that the command had mobilised all necessary resources to ensure the safe return of the victim and the arrest of those behind the abduction.

“Our Anti-Kidnapping Unit is already on their trail and we are making significant progress. We are confident that in less than no time she will be rescued and the perpetrators will be brought to book,” he said.

Responding to concerns over the delay in contact from the abductors, particularly regarding ransom demands nearly 24 hours after the incident, the police spokesman noted that abduction cases do not always follow the same pattern.

“Abduction cases are not all about ransom. As I said earlier, we are already on their trail and making significant progress. Details are things I cannot air in public for now, but be assured that we are on top of the situation,” he added.

The police command declined to disclose operational details, citing ongoing investigations, but assured the public that comprehensive information would be made available after investigations are concluded.

On speculation surrounding the circumstances of the incident, including whether the victim was deliberately targeted or became vulnerable due to road conditions in the area, the command said investigations were still ongoing and conclusions would only be drawn based on verified findings.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements and activities.

“Citizens are advised to avoid spreading misinformation and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through our emergency lines. It is better to report something that turns out to be false than to ignore it and allow a crime to occur,” the spokesman said.

The police also dismissed reports alleging that officers were present at the market when the incident occurred but failed to intervene.

Describing the claims as false, the command said the information was immediately investigated after it came to its attention.

“Officers were deployed to the area, and the victim’s husband and children were taken to safety. However, officers were not on duty at the Vegetable Market at the time of the incident. I can confirm that,” the spokesman said.

The command reiterated that investigations were ongoing, expressing optimism that Mrs. Osa-Gele would be safely reunited with her family while those responsible face prosecution.

The abduction has heightened anxiety among residents and traders in Benin City, with renewed calls for stronger security measures around busy commercial hubs and major roads across the state.
