Security: EBS, Police pledge stronger collaboration

BENIN CITY – The management of Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), Benin, and the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at improving security reportage, public enlightenment, and crime prevention awareness across the state.

The renewed commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) to the corporate headquarters of EBS in Benin, where discussions centred on enhancing the existing working relationship between the media organisation and the police.

Welcoming the police spokesperson, the Acting Managing Director of EBS described the visit as a significant step towards fostering a more seamless and productive partnership between both institutions, particularly in the area of information dissemination on security matters.

According to him, the role of the media in shaping public understanding of security issues remains crucial, stressing the need for balanced, professional, and responsible reporting.

Drawing from his experience as a former crime and defence correspondent, the EBS boss noted that he fully understands the dynamics of security reporting and the importance of presenting fair and accurate accounts.

“As a former crime and defence correspondent, I understand the importance of balanced reporting,” he stated.
“Though I may no longer follow security operatives into the bush, our weekly programme, Security Watch, will continue to air every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on radio and television.”

He further disclosed that the station had deployed a fresh reporter to the police beat to ensure sustained and improved coverage of police activities and security-related developments from the command’s perspective.

The Acting Managing Director assured that EBS would continue to uphold professionalism by giving room for both official police accounts and public perspectives before reports are transmitted to audiences.

Responding, the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem congratulated the Acting Managing Director on his appointment, expressing optimism that the longstanding relationship between the police and EBS would witness greater progress under his leadership.

He described the appointment as well deserved and expressed confidence in the capacity of the new EBS helmsman to strengthen institutional partnerships that would ultimately benefit residents of Edo State.

The police spokesperson further expressed hope that the collaboration between the command and the broadcast station would “skyrocket to another level,” while wishing the Acting Managing Director a successful and impactful tenure.

Both parties also agreed to deepen engagement through more regular interactions, with plans underway for police officials to feature live on the station’s Security Watch programme to discuss pressing security concerns and emerging crime trends in Edo State.
