Kwankwaso threatens to quit NDC if Kano candidates are replaced as party stands insist on 60/40 deal

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has threatened to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress after the party replaced several candidates submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State amid a widening internal power struggle over a 60/40 sharing agreement.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress said the decision followed what it described as a breach of an earlier agreement on how party positions and elective tickets should be shared between the existing party structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc. The party maintained that the arrangement was meant to guide fair distribution of political offices within the state.
According to a document signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman Hon Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the changes were made to reflect the agreed balance of power between both sides. The document was also sent to national party leaders and key stakeholders including the Kwankwasiyya leadership and zonal officials.
Under the updated list, the party approved new candidates for several federal constituencies in Kano State. These include Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani for Kumbotso, Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa, Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa and Tudun Wada, Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa Rimin Gado Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila and Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale.
The party also adjusted its selections for several seats in the State House of Assembly including constituencies in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress explained that its internal agreement provides for a 60 40 power sharing formula between the Kwankwasiyya faction and the original party structure, with the Kwankwasiyya group receiving the larger share. The latest changes have deepened tensions within the party and raised concerns over possible fallout ahead of future elections.
