The Adamawa State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has revealed that the state, previously known mainly for drug consumption, has now also become a site for the cultivation of banned substances.
The state commander, Aliyu Abubakar, made the disclosure on Friday in Yola during a ceremony marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Tr@fficking, stating that operatives had discovered and destroyed three cannabis farms across the state.
The farms were located in Mayo Belwa, where one and a half hectares of cannabis were found, and in Mubi South and Mubi North Local Government Areas, where one hectare each was uncovered and destroyed.
Abubakar also outlined other achievements recorded by the command between June 2025 and the present, including the arrest of 583 drug suspects and the conviction of 270 of them.
The command also seized five tonnes of substances comprising tramadol, diazepam, codeine, and methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice.”
Both the NDLEA commander and guest speaker at the event, Dr Stephen John, emphasised the dangerous link between drug abuse and crime, noting that individuals rarely carry out robbery, k!dn@pping, or violent att@cks without first being under the influence of illicit substances.
Dr John further warned that criminals are increasingly deploying more sophisticated methods and weapons, stressing that governments must also intensify their own strategies and capabilities if the country is to be effectively protected from such threats.
