The Ogun State Government has confirmed yet another gas leakage incident that affected students of Our Lady of Apostles Primary and Secondary Schools (OLAS) in Ijebu-Ode on Wednesday, marking the third such occurrence within a three-month period.
Speaking in an interview with an online platform, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed that approximately 60 students were affected in the latest incident.
The first leakage took place on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, resulting in the hospitalisation of no fewer than 30 students and two teachers at the State General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode.
Less than six weeks later, a second gas leakage struck the same school and surrounding institutions, this time affecting over 100 students and teachers across the local government area.
In response to that second incident, Governor Dapo Abiodun ordered the immediate closure of the school and directed that a full investigation be launched to prevent any future recurrence.
He also ordered the establishment of a situation room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, where free medical treatment was made available to affected students and residents from surrounding areas including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje market.
Despite those measures, the gas leakage resurfaced again on Wednesday during school hours, causing breathing difficulties, discomfort, and widespread panic on the school premises.
Affected students were promptly evacuated and transported to the State Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for treatment.
The Environment Commissioner confirmed that the state government has identified a gas facility in the vicinity as the likely source and will be shutting it down as part of efforts to get to the bottom of the recurring problem.
He stated that the leakage has been traced to a pipeline belonging to a company in the area, adding that the government is not prepared to take any further risks and will proceed with closing down the facility.
