Police begin crackdown on vehicles without number plates in Borno

In a statement issued on Wednesday, ASP Nahum Daso, police spokesperson in Borno, said the exercise was in compliance with a directive by IGP Olutunji Disu.
Daso said the operation is aimed at strengthening public safety, improving intelligence gathering and preventing criminals from exploiting vehicle anonymity to commit crimes.
He said the command considers the exercise a strategic crime prevention measure.
CP Naziru Abdulmajid said the operation is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, adding that the exercise is designed to promote accountability and support ongoing efforts to combat crime and criminality across the state.
The commissioner urged vehicle owners and operators to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and fitted with approved number plates.
He also advised owners of vehicles with covered, altered, defaced or obscured plates to regularise their status immediately to avoid sanctions.
“The operation is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to promote accountability and support ongoing efforts to combat crime and criminality,” the statement reads.
The command assured residents that the enforcement exercise would be carried out professionally, fairly and in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
It called on members of the public to cooperate with police personnel and other relevant agencies during the exercise.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged road users to comply with the directive and other traffic regulations in the interest of public safety and national security.
