Police Launch Crackdown on Vehicles Without Number Plates in Adamawa

The Adamawa State Police Command has begun impounding vehicles operating without registration number plates, as well as those with concealed or altered plate numbers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed that a special task force had been set up by the Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, to enforce the directive.

According to the statement, the Commissioner directed the immediate implementation of a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at curbing the use of vehicles without registration plates and those with concealed, altered, defaced, or otherwise obscured registration details.

The statement explained that in line with the directive, the Commissioner had constituted a special task force comprising personnel drawn from relevant departments and formations within the command, to be headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Abubakar Haruna, with responsibility for monitoring compliance and carrying out enforcement operations across the state.

The command expressed concern over the rising use of unregistered and improperly identified vehicles, describing the trend as a serious threat to public safety and security.

It noted that such vehicles undermine efforts geared toward crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and public safety, warning that criminal elements often exploit them to carry out crimes while evading detection.

The statement further explained that the task force had been mandated to identify, stop, and take appropriate legal action against vehicles found operating without approved registration plates or with concealed, altered, covered, or tampered registration numbers, noting that such vehicles may be impounded and subjected to the necessary legal procedures in line with existing laws.

The Commissioner of Police urged vehicle owners and other road users across the state to fully comply with vehicle registration requirements and all traffic regulations, warning that the enforcement exercise would be carried out without fear or favour, with no individual or group exempted from compliance.
