Police rescue woman chained by brother for 16 months in Abuja + Video

A woman identified as Ms. Grace Aniekuoku has been rescued from captivity in the Mpape area of Maitama Extension, Abuja, after allegedly being chained and locked inside a dark room by her brother for more than one year and four months.

The FCT Police Command confirmed the rescue of the 36-year-old woman in a statement on Monday.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Mohammed Sanusi, who confirmed the development on Monday, said, “The command received a distress report on June 12, 2026, alleging that the victim, an indigene of Anambra State, was being unlawfully detained under inhumane conditions by her brother, Mr. Chinedu Aniekuoku.

“A team of detectives from the Katampe Division was immediately deployed to the scene following receipt of the report.

“Upon arrival, the suspect became hostile and resisted the officers, refusing them access to the premises where he had confined his sister.

“However, the officers forcefully gained entry into the room and discovered the victim in chains, in an extremely emaciated condition and lying on her own waste under deplorable sanitary conditions.

“The suspect was promptly arrested, while the victim was rescued and rushed to a hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly taken away the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago.”

The Police believe the prolonged confinement was intended to prevent the victim from questioning the whereabouts of her child.

Sanusi said efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the missing child, while the victim continues to receive medical care and rehabilitation.

He added that the suspect remains in police custody and will be taken to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, urging residents to promptly report cases of abuse, unlawful detention, and other criminal acts to law enforcement authorities.
