The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has made it clear that it will present a presidential candidate based purely on merit, regardless of the individual’s geographical origin, religion, or ethnic background.
PRP’s National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, stated this during an interview that has been making rounds on social media, declaring that zoning is not a consideration for the party and that competence and capacity are the only criteria that matter when selecting a candidate for the nation’s highest office.
He argued that the longstanding tradition of insisting the presidency must rotate to a particular region of the country has done enormous damage to Nigeria, far more than many people are willing to acknowledge.
To drive his point home, he pointed to the eight years Nigeria spent under former President Muhammadu Buhari a northerner describing his administration as inept, incompetent, and indifferent to the needs of the people.
For Baba-Ahmed, that example alone illustrates why where a candidate comes from should never be the determining factor in choosing a president.
He reaffirmed that the PRP remains committed to fielding a candidate it believes has the ability and capacity to lead the country, irrespective of which part of Nigeria that person calls home.
