Rainstorm kills woman, granddaughter, destroys houses in Bauchi

A rainstorm has killed 50-year-old Aisha Sagir and her 4-year-old granddaughter, Rahama Sagir, and destroyed several houses in Katsinawa, Bara Village, Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the incident in a message sent to the state government on behalf of the Commissioner of Police. He said preliminary reports indicated that the incident occurred at about 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 10 June 2026.

Nafiu said Kirfi LGA experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, and the severe weather resulted in the tragic loss of the victims.

“In addition to the loss of lives, the rainstorm destroyed several houses, livestock, and other valuables worth millions of naira. Police operatives attached to Kirfi Division have visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage and to maintain order in the affected community,” he said.

He added that Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and the people of Kirfi LGA. He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

The police spokesman assured residents that the command, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, remains committed to supporting disaster response efforts and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.

Nafiu advised citizens to remain vigilant during this rainy season and to report any emergencies promptly to security agencies for swift response.

Community reaction
In his reaction, community leader Hon. Muhammad Bashir Bara, Dan Galadiman Bara, said: “We are in deep shock. We woke up today to the terrible tragedy of the flood in our hometown, Bara, in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.”

He said the flood caused the loss of two lives, Aishatu Sagir and her granddaughter Rahama Sagir, along with the destruction of houses and the loss of livestock and property belonging to the community. “The number of affected properties cannot be counted yet,” he added.
