Tight Security at Aso Rock as Protest Threat Looms Over Oyo School Kidnapping Crisis

Security was significantly reinforced on Thursday at the entrance and exit gates of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as authorities took precautionary measures to prevent any possible breach ahead of a planned protest over the kidn@pping of schoolchildren in Oyo State.

A heavy deployment of security operatives including police personnel, Department of State Services (DSS) agents, and military officers was visible at checkpoints and roadblocks around the Villa, with strict screening of all individuals seeking entry.

State House staff were required to present valid identity cards before being granted access to the complex, though no incidents of harassment were reported.

By around 8:00 a.m., vehicles approaching the Villa from multiple entry points were being subjected to thorough searches, with a strong security presence maintained along routes from the Asokoro and Federal Secretariat axes.

The heightened security measures caused noticeable traffic disruption across several parts of Abuja.

While no official statement was issued to explain the intensified security arrangements, the development is widely believed to be connected to an ultimatum issued the previous day by Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), who had threatened to lead a march to the Presidential Villa if the abd¥cted schoolchildren were not freed by Thursday.

Sowore had given the government until that date to secure the release of approximately 46 pupils and teachers abd¥cted on May 15 from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, criticising the Federal Government for what he described as a negligent response to the country’s escalating insecurity crisis and calling for greater accountability from those in leadership.

The abd¥ction has sparked nationwide outrage, with the National Union of Teachers (NUT) staging protests and demanding urgent government action to rescue the victims.

Citizens and advocacy groups have continued to mount pressure on the authorities to strengthen security measures and ensure better protection for schools across the country amid a troubling rise in kidn@pping incidents.
