At least three hospitals in the United Kingdom have declared critical incidents as an extreme heat wave continues to strain the National Health Service, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of appointments and pushing facilities to their limits.
A rare red warning for extreme heat has been issued by the Met Office, with temperatures reaching 36°C in some parts of the country.
The surge in heat-related illness has driven a sharp increase in accident and emergency visits, while vital medical equipment including MRI scanners has failed to function properly due to the high temperatures.
The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital was among the first to declare a critical incident, citing the widespread impact of the extreme heat and humidity on both staff and patients.
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, NNUH, and Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth have also declared critical incidents.
NNUH currently has no working MRI scanners, while cooling units at Queen Alexandra Hospital failed, causing temperatures inside the facility to rise sharply and affecting digital systems, theatres, cardiac catheter laboratories, and diagnostic scanning services.
Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust confirmed that engineers are on site working to restore affected systems, while assuring the public that patients and staff remain safe.
In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, the health system is struggling with the influx of patients, with at least 362 outpatient appointments cancelled.
London’s ambulance service recorded its highest ever number of life-threatening emergencies in a single day, responding to 642 calls ranging from serious injuries to cardiac arrests.
Patients have been advised to continue attending their appointments unless contacted directly, to bring plenty of water, and to limit the number of people accompanying them to medical facilities.
