A crocodile believed by residents to be Asuo Tano, a spiritually significant reptile associated with the Tano River deity in Ghanaian traditional religion has been discovered inside a residential compound, sparking both alarm and reverence among community members who insist traditional rituals must be performed before the animal is returned to its habitat.
Footage of the incident shows the sizeable crocodile wedged between compound walls in what appears to be a densely built residential area.
The reptile, identified by residents as a slender-snouted crocodile, remained stationary in the narrow passage between structures.
Community members have interpreted the crocodile’s appearance as a spiritual visitation rather than a routine wildlife intrusion, invoking the belief that Asuo Tano periodically emerges from the river as a messenger from the ancestral realm.
“Asuo Tano has come outside today; libation must be poured before it returns to the river,” a resident was quoted as saying, reflecting the widespread conviction among locals that traditional leaders must be summoned to conduct the appropriate ceremonies before the animal is allowed to leave.
Crocodiles hold sacred status in several Ghanaian communities, most notably in Paga in the Upper East Region, where the animals are considered community totems and live in close, peaceful proximity to residents.
