Unverified Claims of Attack Circulate in Borno Amid Ongoing Information Confusion

Published

on

Unverified reports circulating on social media claim that fighters launched attacks in the early hours of the morning near Buratai Road, the 162 Battalion in Mandara, or the Mandara Mountains area of Borno State.

The posts, some accompanied by graphic footage, have not been confirmed by the Nigerian military or any major news outlet.

An online news platform shared the claims online, though no corresponding article appeared on their website.

The lack of corroboration from credible sources raises serious questions about the accuracy of the reports, particularly given that some of the footage being circulated appears to be older propaganda material rather than evidence of a fresh incident.

The Nigerian military has not issued any official statement on the alleged attack. Recent verified military reports, however, do note that troops successfully repelled a separate attack in Gajigana in the same general region, underscoring that security operations in Borno remain active.

The situation highlights a recurring challenge in covering Borno’s ongoing insurgency, where unverified social media claims frequently circulate alongside and sometimes contradict official military accounts, making it difficult to establish an accurate picture of events on the ground.
