61 inmates memorise Quran in Kano Correctional Centre rehabilitation program

No fewer than 61 inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, Kano State, have successfully completed the memorisation and recitation of the Holy Quran as part of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s rehabilitation and reformation programme.

The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu K/Nassarawa.

According to the statement, the graduating class comprised 55 male and six female inmates, all of whom demonstrated remarkable dedication and perseverance throughout the programme.

K/Nassarawa said many of the inmates had little or no knowledge of complete Quranic recitation before their admission into the custodial centre but, through structured religious instruction, discipline and commitment, they attained full memorisation of the Holy Quran.

He explained that the programme forms part of the Correctional Service’s broader efforts to rehabilitate inmates through moral, educational and spiritual development to facilitate their successful reintegration into society upon release.

To recognise the achievement, the Nigerian Correctional Service, in collaboration with the Chokali Humanitarian Foundation, presented each of the graduating inmates with welfare packages comprising new clothing, mattresses, blankets and financial support.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, commended the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for providing leadership and sustaining policies that promote educational, vocational and moral development programmes across custodial centres nationwide.

According to Lakpene, such initiatives are equipping inmates with the knowledge, skills and values needed to become responsible and productive citizens after serving their sentences.

Also speaking, the Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, DCC Ibrahim Isah Rambo, appreciated the Kano State Command and the Chokali Humanitarian Foundation for their support towards the programme.

He described the Quran graduation ceremony as evidence of the positive impact of collaboration and the Service’s commitment to the holistic rehabilitation of inmates.

The event concluded with special prayers led by the Custodial Chaplain, DSC Mohammed Alkanawy, and the Chief Imam, Imam Nasiru Abdu, who prayed for the inmates, the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command and the country.

The District Head and Dan Ruwatan Kano, Ibrahim Ado Bayero, also presented certificates to the 61 graduating inmates in recognition of their successful completion of the Quran memorisation programme.
