Army officer killed during rescue of kidnapped Oyo pupils, teachers buried

Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, a 28-year-old officer of the Nigerian Army who was killed during the operation to rescue abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, has been laid to rest.

The officer died while leading troops in the mission that secured the release of the victims, who regained freedom on July 10, 2026, after weeks in captivity.

The victims had been abducted on May 15, 2026, when gunmen attacked three schools — Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and LA Primary School — and took pupils and teachers into the forest.

Reports surrounding the circumstances of Lieutenant Isaac’s death vary. While some accounts indicate that his convoy was struck by explosives planted by terrorists at the Old Oyo National Park, others suggest he encountered a landmine allegedly set by members of the Ansaru group, believed to be responsible for the abduction.

Born on August 25, 1997, the late officer was buried with full military honours on July 10, 2026, at the 23rd Armoured Brigade Cemetery in Yola, Adamawa State.

He was not the only casualty recorded during the rescue operation. The Nigerian Army, in a statement issued after the victims were freed, acknowledged losses among security personnel.

“The operations were carefully planned and executed to avoid collateral damage and to ensure the safe rescue of the children and teachers. However, there were casualties among security forces,” the statement noted.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, while confirming the successful rescue, paid tribute to the fallen personnel.

“We are grateful for the safe return of the children and teachers abducted from Oriire LGA 56 days ago. Our priority now is to reunite them with their families and support their rehabilitation after this traumatic experience,” he said.

“We also commend the security agencies for their sacrifices. May the souls of those who paid the ultimate price rest in peace, and may God comfort their families.”

The operation involved security operatives from more than 10 agencies and was led by Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife, General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army.

Tributes have since poured in from Nigerians, who described Lieutenant Isaac as a courageous and selfless officer who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation. Many called for his sacrifice to be honoured and remembered as a symbol of dedication and patriotism.
