Adamawa launches 50% subsidised fertiliser sales

As part of efforts to boost food production this year, the Adamawa State Government has launched the sale of fertiliser at a 50 per cent subsidy.

The sale and distribution of subsidised fertiliser for the 2026 rainy season is aimed at reducing production costs, boosting agricultural output and strengthening the state’s drive towards food security and export expansion.

The initiative is part of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s agricultural development agenda, which seeks to reposition farming as a major driver of economic growth, rural transformation and employment creation in the state.

Flagging off the programme in Yola, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Salihu Idris, said his administration approved the subsidy to make fertiliser more affordable and accessible to farmers across the 21 local government areas of the state.

He disclosed that under the arrangement, a bag of NPK 20:10:10 would be sold for ₦23,000, while NPK 27:13:13 would cost ₦27,000.

Idris cautioned beneficiaries against diverting, hoarding or reselling the fertiliser, stressing that the government would intensify monitoring to ensure that only genuine farmers benefit from the scheme.

He noted that the fertiliser intervention reflects the administration’s commitment to modernising agriculture, increasing productivity and improving farmers’ incomes, adding that sustained investment in the sector remains key to achieving food sufficiency and economic diversification.

He further said the state government is collaborating with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) to improve access to international markets for agricultural produce as part of efforts to transition Adamawa from subsistence farming to value-added and export-driven agriculture.

The Chairman of the Maize Association of Nigeria in Adamawa State, Yusuf Ibrahim, described the initiative as a welcome development that would ease the burden on farmers and enhance productivity during the farming season.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Adamawa State chapter, Suleiman Gankuba, said strengthening agriculture remains vital to economic stability, rural prosperity and food security.
