APC no longer reflects founding vision – Fayemi

Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti state and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned that the ruling party is gradually losing its vision.
He said it could face internal implosion if urgent steps are not taken to address growing discontent within its ranks.
Fayemi expressed concern over the increasing adoption of consensus arrangements during party primaries, describing the development as a threat to internal democracy and party unity.
Speaking during an interview on State Affairs with Edmund Obilo, the former minister of solid minerals development said the APC had drifted away from the ideals upon which it was founded.
“This is not where the party has come from. We have lost our bearing and the vision of the founding fathers of this party,” Fayemi said.
He lamented what he described as the absence of intellectual debate and ideological engagement within the ruling party, noting that the current political atmosphere could trigger frustration among party members.
Fayemi also cautioned against the growing culture of politicians seeking endorsements and favours from the Presidency, warning that such a trend could deepen divisions within the APC.
“It would be unfortunate if everybody is running to Aso Rock because they want something,” he stated.
“Those who don’t get consensus won’t be happy… and you’re waiting for an implosion.”
On allegations that President Bola Tinubu was imposing candidates on the party, Fayemi said he did not entirely agree with the claim.
“Maybe they just agree with him,” he added.
The former governor said he had earlier raised similar concerns during the APC South-West conference recently held in Lagos, stressing the need for the party to return to its founding principles and strengthen internal democracy.
