Asaba King, Prof. Azinge Bans Deltans From Selling Ogbono In Markets And Hotels, Says It’s Against Tradition

Secrets Reporters
The traditional authorities of Asaba Kingdom have announced a ban on the sale of ogbono seed, locally known as “Okoru Enu,” in all indigenous markets within the kingdom, citing long-standing cultural and spiritual traditions.
The directive was announced during a press briefing on Saturday, July 5, 2026, by the 14th Omu Ahaba of Asaba Kingdom, Obi Chief Dr. Ada Biosah, alongside Ndi Eze Ahaba.
Speaking at the briefing, the Omu Ahaba said ogbono seed has traditionally been regarded as a forbidden item in Asaba Kingdom, adding that the restriction is rooted in customs observed for generations.
She said the decision followed observations by His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, OON, that ogbono seed was being sold openly in indigenous markets across the kingdom.
According to her, a sensitisation campaign will begin immediately through market leaders and union executives to educate traders on the directive and ensure compliance.
“Sensitisation will be carried out through various union heads and market leaders to inform all traders dealing in ogbono seed to desist from it henceforth. A taskforce committee will also be set up to checkmate those who refuse to comply,” Obi Dr. Ada Biosah said.
She clarified that the prohibition applies only to the sale of ogbono seed in Asaba’s indigenous markets and does not prevent residents or visitors from consuming the soup.
“The mantra is simple: Don’t sell it in our indigenous markets. You can buy it outside Asaba and cook it in your residence for consumption. This is our tradition, and it must be obeyed, despite the hospitality of Asaba people,” she added.
Also speaking at the briefing, Ndi Eze Ahaba reaffirmed support for the directive and pledged to work with market leaders to ensure compliance across the kingdom’s indigenous markets.
