A group of young men have set up makeshift mining operations right along the seashore, digging into the sand and washing it in search of gold, according to a video circulating online.
Footage shows one of the young men bent over a section of beach, using improvised wooden planks and tools to sift through sand near the shoreline, with the ocean’s waves crashing just metres away.
The unconventional mining setup, built directly on the beach rather than inland pits typically associated with illegal mining, has caught the attention of many online who found the approach both curious and concerning.
Illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, has expanded into increasingly unconventional locations across Ghana in recent years, as miners search for gold-bearing sand and soil in areas previously considered unlikely mining sites, including riverbanks, farmlands, and now, apparently, coastal shorelines.
The exact location of the beach mining operation has not been independently confirmed.
