Stanley Ugagbe, the abducted investigative journalist with Secret Reporters, has regained his freedom after spending several days in captivity.

Ugagbe’s release comes after widespread condemnation from media organisations, civil society groups and press freedom advocates, who had demanded his immediate and unconditional release following his disappearance on July 1. He was released on bail after presenting a Level 14 civil servant to stand as surety. His official laptop and phone are still with the police, with assurance of releasing it to him tomorrow.

His abduction sparked national and international concern, with organisations including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Press Institute (IPI), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and other stakeholders calling on the authorities to account for his whereabouts and guarantee his safety.

The President of International Press Institute who’s a veteran journalist, Muskilu Mojeed was on ground during the process of getting him released.

Details surrounding the circumstances of his release are still emerging.

Ugagbe, a reporter with Secret Reporters, was reportedly taken in connection with a report published by SecretsReporters, titled “EXCLUSIVE: CBN Deputy Governor Emem Usoro Linked to N3.6bn Los Angeles Property Amid Questions Over Asset Declaration Compliance (Part 2)”
