Nottingham Forest have appointed Austrian tactician Oliver Glasner as their new head coach, with the former Crystal Palace boss becoming the club’s fifth manager in less than a year.

Oliver Glasner, 51, replaces Vitor Pereira, who was dismissed on Tuesday just two minutes before an exit clause in his contract was due to expire.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis welcomed the appointment, describing Glasner as the ideal candidate to lead the club’s long-term ambitions.

“Oliver is a winner,” Marinakis said.

“It was clear that we share the same vision, the same ambition and the same relentless desire to succeed.”

Discussions with Glasner began earlier this summer after he left Crystal Palace at the end of last season in search of a fresh challenge.

Forest have endured a turbulent spell in the dugout. Nuno Espirito Santo started last season in charge before Ange Postecoglou, Sean Dyche and Pereira each had brief spells at the City Ground.

Glasner arrives with an impressive record. He guided Crystal Palace to their first major trophy by winning the FA Cup in his first season, then followed it up with Europa Conference League success before lifting the Community Shield after a penalty shootout win over Liverpool.

He is also one of only three coaches to have won both the Europa League and the Europa Conference League, having led Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory in the 2021-22 campaign.

Speaking after his appointment, Glasner said the club’s vision convinced him to take the job.

“From my very first conversations with the owner and the leadership team, it was evident to me that they have a clear vision for this football club and complete trust and belief in me and my staff to build a strong future together over the long term,” he said.

“That trust and shared commitment, together with the potential that I see within the squad, were key factors for me and I am excited about what we can achieve together.”

Marinakis believes Glasner has the qualities needed to restore Forest’s status among English football’s leading clubs.

“He has consistently demonstrated throughout his career that he can build outstanding teams and deliver success against the strongest competition,” he said.

“He has earned success through his leadership, his personality and the style of football his teams play.

“It has always been our goal to establish Nottingham Forest once again among the leading clubs in England and Europe.

“Our ambition is not simply to compete – our ambition is to win, to challenge for major honours and to create a football club that our supporters can be proud of for many years to come.”

Pereira had only taken charge in February after replacing Sean Dyche. He steered Forest to 16th place in the Premier League, finishing five points clear of the relegation zone, and guided the club to the Europa League semi-finals, where they were beaten by eventual champions Aston Villa.
