CAC sets August 1 deadline to enforce company business letter rules

The Corporate Affairs Commission has announced that it will begin full enforcement of statutory requirements governing the information companies must display on their business letters from August 1, 2026, warning that defaulters will face sanctions.

The commission disclosed this in a public notice issued by its management on Tuesday, stating that the enforcement would apply to all companies registered under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 or any law repealed by the Act.

According to the commission, the exercise is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with Sections 304(1) and (2) as well as 729(1)(c) of the Act, which prescribe the particulars that must appear on company business letters.

It explained that every registered company is required to clearly state on its business letters, in legible characters, the present forename or initials and surname of each director, any former forename and surname, and the nationality of directors who are not Nigerians.

The commission added that companies must also display their registered company name, registration number and registered office address on all business correspondence.

The CAC warned that, from August 1, it would no longer tolerate non-compliance with the statutory provisions and would impose the sanctions prescribed under the law on defaulting companies.

It urged all registered companies to review their business stationery and other official correspondence to ensure they comply with the legal requirements before the enforcement date.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and customer satisfaction, saying the enforcement forms part of ongoing efforts to build a more resilient and responsive corporate regulatory environment in Nigeria.
