CJN bars lawyers from using ‘Barrister’ title at supreme court

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed legal practitioners to discontinue the use of the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in official engagements.

The directive was conveyed in a memorandum dated July 13, 2026, and addressed to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and lawyers.

According to the memo, which was signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi, the CJN described the use of the title as inappropriate and inconsistent with the level of professionalism expected within the apex court.

“I am directed by the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria to notify all relevant officers that the use of the title ‘Barrister’ as a prefix is inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected within the Supreme Court,” the memo stated.

The CJN directed that the title be removed from all official correspondence, records, documents, identity materials, and other formal engagements with immediate effect.

She also tasked heads of departments and unit leaders with ensuring strict compliance among officers under their supervision.

The move is seen as part of efforts to reinforce professionalism and standardise formal legal titles within Nigeria’s judicial system.
