Dubai and Botswana Forge Landmark Commodity Corridor, Unlocking Southern Africa’s Mineral Wealth

Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) and the Botswana Stock Exchange Group (BSE) have inked a strategic agreement to establish Africa’s inaugural “sister-hub” commodity trading corridor. This landmark deal creates a direct conduit between Dubai’s extensive global financial network and the rich mineral reserves of Southern Africa, promising to reshape regional trade dynamics and investment flows.
The partnership, formalised between DMCC and the operator of the Botswana Mercantile Exchange (BMX), establishes a robust physical and digital trade pipeline connecting Gaborone directly to Dubai’s international trading, finance, and logistics ecosystem. While central to Botswana’s export strategy, the agreement carries profound implications for neighbouring mining powerhouses, particularly Zambia, Africa’s second-largest copper producer. This initiative aims to streamline supply chains, enhance access to trade finance, and circumvent traditional intermediary markets for critical commodities.
By integrating Gaborone into Dubai’s sophisticated trading and capital infrastructure, the agreement positions the Botswana exchange as a pivotal regional hub for key exports including copper, critical minerals, diamonds, coal, soda ash, and agricultural products. For copper-rich nations like Zambia and their regional partners, this development could unlock significant institutional liquidity. Enhanced cross-border trade finance, the availability of Shariah-compliant Islamic funding instruments, and tokenised commodity frameworks facilitated through DMCC’s FinX platform are poised to empower producers seeking to move raw and beneficiated minerals into international markets.
Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DMCC, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration. “Botswana is one of the world’s leading commodity-producing nations, and this partnership with the Botswana Stock Exchange Group reflects our shared ambition to unlock greater value from resources, including diamonds, copper, and beef, through stronger international market access,” he stated. “By combining production strengths with Dubai’s world-leading trade, finance, and logistics ecosystem, we can create new investment opportunities, improve access to global buyers and institutional capital, and support long-term economic growth.”
Under the memorandum of understanding, the BSE and DMCC will collaborate across trade finance, physical vaulting, logistics, and digital asset infrastructure. A cornerstone of this initiative is the certification of the BMX storage vault in Gaborone under the DMCC Global Good Delivery Standard (GGDS), marking it as the first African facility to be accredited under this multi-commodity certification framework. This certified vaulting infrastructure is designed to offer standardized verification, transparent warehouse receipts, and direct connectivity to sovereign wealth funds, institutional investors, and Islamic finance markets for copper, cobalt, and agricultural producers across Botswana, Zambia, and the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Hon. Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, underscored the deal’s significance for the nation’s economic transformation agenda. “This partnership represents an important step in our journey to maximise value from our mineral and broader commodity resources,” she commented. “As we implement our economic transformation agenda, we are focused not only on sustaining production, but on creating stronger market access, attracting investment, advancing beneficiation, and positioning the region as a competitive player in global value chains.” Neo Mooki, Chairperson of the Botswana Stock Exchange Group, added, “By partnering with DMCC, we are connecting our strengths in diamonds, minerals, agriculture, and livestock to one of the world’s most sophisticated commodity trading ecosystems. Together, we are creating new opportunities for producers, investors, and market participants, while supporting economic diversification and strengthening the region’s role in international trade.”
The agreement also introduces advanced digital financial solutions to African resource supply chains. The entities plan to leverage DMCC’s digital platforms to facilitate the tokenisation of physical commodity parcels as Real World Assets (RWAs). This mechanism will enable global institutional investors to back digital assets with physical copper, critical minerals, or agricultural inventory securely stored in Gaborone. The initial commercial deployment will focus on the diamond sector, establishing a direct link between the state-owned Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) and the Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE) through coordinated diamond tenders anticipated to commence in late 2026. This move solidifies a direct commercial bridge between Southern Africa’s rough diamond output and Dubai, a globally recognised premier diamond trading hub.
