The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is reportedly considering boycotting future FIFA World Cup tournaments if FIFA goes ahead with plans to sell stakes in its competitions to private investors.
According to reports, FIFA is seeking to raise about £3 billion through private investment. The plan would involve selling a minority stake in a new entity known as FIFA Forward Enterprise.
UEFA believes FIFA has gone too far with the proposal, and European member associations are expected to hold an emergency meeting this week to discuss the issue.
According to Sky News, some UEFA members are willing to consider boycotting the World Cup if FIFA President Gianni Infantino does not abandon the plan.
The report also said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin did not attend the recent World Cup final following a series of disagreements with FIFA.
It is also understood that the Football Association and several other national football associations were not informed about the investment plan before it was announced publicly.
The lack of consultation has reportedly angered several football associations across Europe.
Reports further suggest that UEFA is also considering a boycott of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup as part of efforts to pressure FIFA to drop the proposal.
UEFA believes the planned investment deal is not in the best interest of football.
