Everyone acts as if I am holding her hostage – Nigerian woman seeks opinions after her 16-year-old sister received multiple marriage proposals

A Nigerian woman, Nzubechi Ojukwu, has taken to Facebook to seek opinions regarding early marriage after her 16-year-old sister received multiple marriage proposals.

According to Nzubechi, the sister, who lives with her in Lagos, is currently a Senior Secondary School (SS2) student and will turn 17 this October. 

She said her family acts as if she is holding her sister hostage because she rejected the marriage proposals.

Defending her decision, Nzubechi stated that she only wants her sister to complete secondary school and at least reach 20 years of age before considering marriage. 

“Please do you support early marriage? My sister that stays with me here in Lagos will clock 17yrs this October and suitors have not stopped coming,” she wrote.

“Yesterday my mom called to remind me of the suitor that came to ask for her hand in marriage recently but I refused and ended the call, at least let her reach 20 years.

“Everyone keeps saying she is very chubby, she have grown pass her age and she’s too matured in their eyes.

“They’re seeing it as if I am holding her hostage or I want her to keep serving me forever but that’s not my intention, she will enter SS3 by September.

“Will you support your kid sister to marry at the age of 17 or 18 yrs.

“Everyone keeps saying some girls are destined to marry early and anything that stops them from getting married at that age, they will remain single forever. I will just let her go make I rest.”
