HURMA Commends Tinubu, Security Agents Over Oyo Kidnap Victims’ Rescue, Seeks Stronger Action Against Insecurity

The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) Global Resource Initiative has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigeria’s security agencies for the successful rescue and release of kidnapped victims in Oyo State, describing the operation as a significant step in restoring public confidence in the country’s security architecture.

In a press statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, the rights advocacy organisation praised the swift response, coordination and professionalism displayed by security operatives, noting that their efforts ensured the safe return of the victims to their families.

According to HURMA, the successful operation demonstrates that effective collaboration among security agencies can produce positive results in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The Executive Director of HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, said the rescue operation has renewed hope in the ability of the government to protect citizens and secure lives and property across the country.

Despite celebrating the achievement, the organisation urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts toward addressing the broader security challenges facing Nigeria. It stressed that protecting the lives and welfare of citizens remains the government’s primary constitutional responsibility under Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution.

HURMA observed that kidnapping and other forms of insecurity continue to pose serious threats to human rights, public safety and national development, urging authorities to adopt more proactive measures to curb the menace.

The organisation recommended the strengthening of intelligence gathering and community policing initiatives across all states to improve early detection and prevention of criminal activities.

It also called on the government to ensure the diligent prosecution of sponsors and perpetrators of kidnapping, saying effective prosecution would serve as a deterrent to others engaged in similar crimes.

In addition, HURMA advocated increased support for victims of kidnapping through psychosocial care, rehabilitation and reintegration programmes to help them recover from the trauma of their experiences.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring human rights issues, documenting cases of abuse and collaborating with government institutions and security agencies to promote the protection of lives and fundamental rights.

HURMA concluded by thanking President Tinubu for his leadership while urging sustained and coordinated efforts until every Nigerian can live without fear of kidnapping or insecurity.
