Hard work, not beauty, built my career — Peju Johnson

Actress and filmmaker, Peju Johnson, has said that while physical beauty may create opportunities in the entertainment industry, it is talent, professionalism and dedication that ultimately sustain a successful career.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, Johnson said she has worked hard to ensure she is recognised for her acting ability rather than her appearance.

She said, “I believe my appearance may sometimes influence the kind of roles people imagine me for, but I don’t want to be limited by my looks. Beauty is just one part of who I am as an actress. I always want people to see my talent, versatility and ability to interpret different characters. I love roles that challenge me and allow me to show different sides of my craft,” she said.

Addressing assumptions people often make about attractive actresses, Johnson noted that success in Nollywood requires far more than good looks.

“Sometimes, people can be quick to judge based on appearance, but I have learnt not to let assumptions define me. Behind every achievement is hard work, sacrifice, discipline and consistency. Beauty may open a door, but it is talent, professionalism and dedication that keep you in the room,” she added.

The actress also spoke about her latest movie, ‘Mine Alone’, revealing that the project was inspired by the need to explore the difference between genuine love and unhealthy obsession.

According to her, the film examines themes of love, insecurity and possessiveness while encouraging viewers to reflect on the consequences of toxic relationships.

“The inspiration behind ‘Mine Alone’ came from the desire to tell a story about love, obsession, insecurity and the thin line between deep affection and unhealthy attachment. A lot of people mistake possessiveness for love, and I wanted to create a movie that would make people reflect on relationships, choices and the consequences of allowing obsession to take over. It is entertaining, but it also carries a message,” she said.

Johnson explained that she prioritised suitability over popularity when selecting the cast for the film.

She said actor, Lanre Adediwura, was chosen because he possessed the energy and emotional depth required for his role, while Kiki Bakare was selected for his calm personality and the natural chemistry they share on screen.

Reflecting on the production process, Johnson described producing and starring in the film as one of the most demanding experiences of her career.

“As a producer and actress, I had to wear different hats and pay attention to every detail, from the script to pre-production, production and performance. One major experience was learning how to balance creativity with the pressure that comes with being responsible for an entire project. The support from my cast and crew also made the journey memorable,” she said.

On concerns about actors’ hygiene during romantic scenes, Johnson stressed that professionalism should always come first.

“As actors, we sometimes have to deal with different situations on set, and professionalism is very important. I have been fortunate to work with colleagues who understand the importance of hygiene and respecting your scene partner. Romantic scenes require trust and preparation between actors, so maintaining good personal hygiene is something every professional actor should take seriously,” she said.
