I left Saudi League on strong footing – Emenalo

Former Super Eagles defender Michael Emenalo says he is leaving the Saudi Pro League in a strong position after stepping down as the league’s first Director of Football following three years in the role, The PidomNigeria reports.

Emenalo, who was appointed in 2023 as the league’s first Director of Football, oversaw one of the most transformative periods in Saudi football, with the league attracting some of the world’s biggest stars and significantly raising its global profile.

On Wednesday, Emenalo’s departure from the Saudi Pro League was officially confirmed, bringing an end to a tenure during which he helped establish the structures that have driven the league’s rapid growth.

Reflecting on his time in Saudi Arabia, the 60-year-old said building a lasting foundation for the league was his greatest achievement.

“When I joined the SPL’s transformation journey in 2023, what struck me most was the audacity of its ambition. We set out to do something few believed possible, on a timeline fewer still thought realistic,” Emenalo told The Athletic.

“During the period since, we have introduced and stewarded the standards and frameworks needed to pursue this audacious ambition seriously.

“This foundation is, to me, the achievement that matters most. There is, of course, still work to be done to develop the league and to grow football across Saudi Arabia; no undertaking of this scale is ever truly finished. But I believe I leave our league on a strong footing, well positioned for continued success.”

“On a personal level, it has been a genuine pleasure to immerse myself in Saudi culture, to learn from it, and to experience the excitement of this adventure.

I thank everyone who has supported and collaborated with me along the way—in particular, the staff of the Saudi League and the members of the football development department, whose excellence, resilience, and dedication were the driving force behind everything we achieved.”

Before embarking on his administrative career, Emenalo earned 14 caps for Nigeria and was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

His transition from player to football executive has seen him become one of the most accomplished Nigerian administrators in the global game.

The former Nigerian international had already established himself as one of football’s most respected administrators before moving to Saudi Arabia. During his time at Chelsea, he served in several key roles, including chief scout, assistant first-team coach and sporting director, helping reshape the club’s academy and recruitment structure under former owner Roman Abramovich.

His work contributed to one of the club’s most successful eras, with Chelsea winning the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and several domestic trophies before he moved to AS Monaco as sporting director in 2017.

During his time at Chelsea, he completely restructured the club’s academy, scouting, loan and women’s team setups, and is credited as a key figure behind the club’s success, having overseen the scouting and transfers of key players including Juan Mata, Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, N’Golo Kanté, Eden Hazard, and Cesc Fàbregas.
