The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has redeployed the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on a special duty assignment, ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election in the state.

According to a police wireless message obtained by SaharaReporters, the redeployment directive was contained in a signal issued by the Force Secretariat, Abuja, on Thursday and marked “Most Immediate.”

The signal, referenced TH.5361/FS/FHQ/ABJ/SUB.7/, was circulated to police commands and formations nationwide, including the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Department of Operations, Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in Zones 1 to 17, commissioners of police in states, and other specialised units.

The directive read: “INGENPOL HAS ORDERED THE POSTING OF COMPOL IBRAHIM GOTAN TO CP COMM OPS FHQ ABUJA ON SPECIAL DUTY W.E.F. X TREAT AS VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE.”

With the redeployment, Gotan will serve under the Commissioner of Police in charge of Communications Operations at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The development comes as political activities intensify in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election, with security remaining a key concern among political stakeholders.

A senior Police source at the Force Headquarters in Abuja confirmed the development to Tribune Online, stating that redeployment has nothing to do with any allegation against the CP Gotan and may be redeployed back to the state after election.

Reacting to the development, the Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Digital Media, Oni Gbenga Lawrence, and the spokesperson for the Adeleke Campaign Organisation, Pelumi Olajengbesi, welcomed the redeployment in separate posts on X.

Lawrence wrote: “The Commissioner of Police in Osun State has been removed. We thank the Inspector General of Police for listening to the voice of the people. The will of the people cannot be denied. Congratulations to the good people of Osun State.”
