Iyabo Obasanjo, a former senator, has disclosed that she quit the All Progressives Congress due to her dissatisfaction with the party’s consensus candidate in Ogun State allegedly breaking commitments.
Iyabo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, claimed that following the party’s internal political process, the candidate had broken promises to her and her supporters.
The former senator stated on The Morayo Show that her departure from the APC was motivated by resentment and disappointment.
“I resigned from the APC because I was upset that the consensus candidate failed to keep the promises he made to me and my followers,” she stated.
Following her resignation from the APC, she was formally welcomed into the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State.
Iyabo had returned to active politics in January 2026 after nearly 15 years away from the political scene.
She joined the APC and stated that she wanted to run for governor of Ogun State.
She did not, however, stay in the ruling party for long.
After losing the governorship ticket, she resigned from the APC on May 31, 2026, citing contempt, treachery, and unfair treatment by the party leadership.
Ahead of the 2027 elections, her switch to the PDP has now brought new drama to Ogun politics.
Her departure raises concerns for the APC over post-primary administration and how the party treats candidates who are eliminated in internal fights.
Iyabo’s entrance gives the opposition PDP a significant political name as it gets ready for Ogun State’s upcoming governorship contest.
The former senator’s most recent statement further demonstrates that her defection was a protest against what she perceived to be a broken agreement between her group and the APC power structure rather than just a typical political change.
