Justice Atuguba Criticises Politicians for Ignoring Voters After Elections

Retired Supreme Court judge Justice William Atuguba has criticised politicians for becoming inaccessible after winning elections.

According to him, many politicians interact freely with voters during election campaigns but become difficult to reach once they assume office.

Justice Atuguba said politicians often present themselves as ordinary citizens during campaigns by joining people in their daily activities to win public support.

Speaking at an event, he said, “Elections are coming; the politicians are free with everybody, drinking palm wine, pounding fufu, washing clothes, more than people of the people. As soon as the results come, our calls will not be picked by the ministers or MPs”.

“What kind of life is this? Just a day before, we’re all one. Today, victory has come, you have no… I mean, is that how it should be?” he added.

At the same event, Justice Atuguba questioned why Korle Klottey MP Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has not yet been appointed as a minister in President John Dramani Mahama’s government.

He described Dr Zanetor as a principled, dedicated and upright leader who represents the type of politician Ghanaians should aspire to have.

“Somebody like Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, she’s not a politician. She is a woman of the people who have been following activities. I don’t know her, I’ve never spoken to her, I’ve never met her. But I’m convinced that that’s the kind of politician people should aspire to be.

“I don’t know why she’s not yet a minister. I hope by saying that I’ve not destroyed her chances,” he remarked.

Justice Atuguba added, “Why not? Such a woman of principle, of dedication, of integrity. Why not?”

His comments come after NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey shared a social media post that renewed speculation about Dr Zanetor’s possible appointment as Minister of Defence.

In a post shared on March 23, 2026, Fifi Kwetey wrote, “Don’t rush your journey. What is meant for you will come together at the right time. Stay patient. Stay consistent.

“Have a great and peaceful week,”

The post, which featured a photo of Fifi Kwetey and Dr Zanetor smiling together, sparked renewed rumours of a possible ministerial appointment.

Earlier reports had also suggested that Dr Zanetor was among the leading candidates for the Defence Minister position, with supporters praising her integrity, discipline and leadership.

However, Dr Zanetor has denied knowing anything about the speculation.

In a video shared by The 1957News, some people referred to her as the “incoming Minister of Defence.”

Smiling, she responded, “Guy, I don’t know about this,” before continuing on her way.

Despite her response, some of the people present could be heard telling her, “We are proud of you.”
