Kenneth Okonkwo, an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, has characterized Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential contender Peter Obi as a pathological liar, dismissing a defamation action brought against him.

Speaking on a television show on Friday, Okonkwo contended that Obi’s legal action was incorrect, claiming that the former Anambra State governor misinterpreted the legal basis for defamation charges.

According to him, defamation suits can only be brought over statements already made, not comments a person merely intends to make in the future.

He described Obi as a classless, non-charismatic politician with little knowledge and zero depth, alleging that Obi falsely claimed he was being sued over statements he intended to make, when in fact the legal process had already begun before Okonkwo’s own public remarks.

Okonkwo said his comments were available on his social media account and challenged the public to verify them, explaining that all he had stated was that it would be unwise for Obi to sue his spokesperson.

Since in defending himself the spokesperson might disclose confidential information, adding that he never said whether such disclosure would destroy Obi or not.

He further argued that the pre-action notice issued by Obi’s legal team marked the actual commencement of the defamation process, insisting that the court proceedings were merely seeking to enforce demands already contained in that notice.

The lawyer and politician also accused Obi of attempting to undermine influential figures from the South-East, reiterating a previous claim that Obi seeks to destroy every rising star from the region.

He questioned why Obi had not taken legal action against other critics, including activist Omoyele Sowore and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, both of whom have publicly criticised him.

Backing Keyamo’s recent remarks, Okonkwo said he agreed with the minister’s description of Obi as someone who lies as naturally as a fish drinks water.

He maintained that Obi had made false statements against him and urged the former Labour Party presidential candidate to seek better legal advice before pursuing defamation claims.
