NADCEL 2026: Tinubu hails Nigerian Army’s role in national, regional security

President Bola Tinubu has described the Nigerian Army as a formidable force whose legacy of courage and professionalism continues to promote peace, stability and security in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.

Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, gave the commendation at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 in Port Harcourt, Rivers.

This is contained in a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, on Monday in Abuja.

Tinubu described the army as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s security architecture and a respected contributor to international peace support operations.

He said the army had consistently demonstrated resilience, discipline and operational excellence in regional interventions and United Nations peacekeeping missions.

According to him, the army’s contributions have safeguarded Nigeria’s sovereignty while strengthening peace and stability across Africa and beyond.

Tinubu pledged continued government support for the army’s modernisation, troop welfare and acquisition of advanced capabilities to tackle emerging security threats.

He also commended the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as a platform for strengthening military cooperation and innovation.

The president said the NADCEL 2026 theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” reflects the enduring bond between the army and Nigerians.

He paid tribute to fallen heroes and assured their families of continued government support.

Tinubu also praised ongoing efforts in indigenous defence production, intelligence sharing and the integration of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, into military operations.

In his remarks, Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers commended the Nigerian Army for sustaining peace and security in Rivers and the Niger Delta.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the army’s operations in the state.

Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said the army’s responsibility extends beyond battlefield victories to sustaining peace, defending national interests and securing Nigeria’s future.

Shaibu said the army would continue its modernisation drive through improved capabilities, equipment renewal, infrastructure development and induction of advanced operational platforms.

He added that addressing contemporary security challenges requires stronger collaboration among the military, government institutions, international partners and citizens.

The grand finale featured a military parade, tactical demonstrations, equipment display, presentation of COAS Commendation Awards and a research and development exhibition showcasing indigenous military innovations.

The event was attended by former Heads of State, senior government officials, Chiefs of Army from 17 African countries, serving and retired military officers, among other dignitaries.
