NAFDAC Intensifies Nationwide Crackdown on Prohibited Sachet and Small PET Alcohol Packaging

Published

on

NAFDAC has initiated a comprehensive, nationwide enforcement drive targeting the removal of banned alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles under 200ml from circulation. This decisive action underscores the agency’s commitment to public health and regulatory compliance within Nigeria’s beverage sector. Businesses involved in the production, distribution, or sale of these prohibited products face significant risks, including product seizure, prosecution, and other stringent regulatory sanctions.

The enforcement campaign, which commenced simultaneously across all six geopolitical zones, is a direct implementation of the Federal Government’s directive to ban these specific packaging formats. According to NAFDAC, this intensified effort follows the shutdown of manufacturing facilities that failed to adhere to the government’s prohibition. The agency’s enforcement teams have been strategically deployed to key distribution channels, including markets, motor parks, retail outlets, and bars, to identify and confiscate non-compliant stock.

This regulatory push is primarily aimed at curbing underage drinking, mitigating harmful alcohol consumption patterns, and addressing the escalating challenge of substance abuse, particularly among the youth. By eliminating these easily accessible and often more affordable packaging formats, NAFDAC seeks to create a safer environment and reduce the prevalence of alcohol-related public health issues.

NAFDAC has issued a clear directive to all stakeholders, including manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and transporters, urging them to voluntarily surrender any remaining stock of the banned products without delay. The agency has explicitly warned that continued engagement in the production, distribution, or sale of these alcoholic beverages constitutes a breach of existing regulations and will attract severe penalties.

The agency is also appealing to the general public for support in this critical exercise. Citizens are encouraged to refrain from purchasing the prohibited products and to actively report any individuals or entities involved in their illicit production, distribution, or sale to the nearest NAFDAC office or via its designated toll-free line. This collaborative approach is deemed essential for the successful eradication of these harmful products from the Nigerian market.
