Nigerian consumers vow to dump Providus Bank fast as hackers gain unauthorised access to cards

Nigeria’s bank customers have vowed to exit Providus Bank over unauthorised access to their debit and payment cards.
Recall that last week, customers of Providus Bank raised the alarm over unauthorised access to their debit cards.

When DAILY POST contacted Providus Bank’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dafe Ivwurie, on July 3, 2026, he promised to revert. However, more than a week later, he had yet to respond on the matter.

Also, the Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations at the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Babatunde Bamigboye, did not respond to enquiries.

The silence from Providus Bank has further fuelled suspicion among customers, who were affected after millions of naira were allegedly stolen from their accounts.

Speaking on the development, the President of the Bank Customers Association of Nigeria, Dr Uju Ogunbunka, said it was regrettable that bank customers had to suffer as a result of the bank’s negligence.

He urged customers not to hesitate to escalate their complaints to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and, if necessary, seek alternative banking options.

“Providus needs to find out what really happened and then take the necessary actions to close the gap. There is no need to play hide-and-seek with customers. Customers can exit the bank because there is a serious issue involving unauthorised card transactions.

“Customers should either exit the bank or take up the issue with the Central Bank of Nigeria. And if Providus is not doing anything positive to address the challenge, they should escalate it to the regulatory authorities,” he told DAILY POST in an interview on Thursday.

DAILY POST reports that hackers gained unauthorised access to the systems of Remita, Sterling Bank, Providus Bank and other financial institutions in March.
