Nigeria’s weak justice system pushing accountability battle abroad — Ogebe

A United States-based Nigerian lawyer and human rights advocate, Emmanuel Ogebe, has blamed Nigeria’s weak rule of law for the increasing resort to foreign institutions in the country’s political battles.

Ogebe said the inability of Nigerian institutions to hold public officials accountable had forced political actors to seek justice and accountability outside the country.

He made the remarks during an interview on Inside Sources monitored by The Eagle Online.

According to him, “The reason why our presidential elections are internationalised is because of the weak rule of law at home in Nigeria.

“If people have been held accountable for their actions in Nigeria, we would not need to be going to foreign fora to pursue some kind of accountability.”

The lawyer noted that the trend reflected a failure of domestic institutions to enforce accountability, leaving foreign governments and institutions to become reference points in Nigeria’s political disputes.

Ogebe argued that strengthening the country’s justice system would eliminate the need for political actors to seek external intervention whenever controversies arise.

He maintained that accountability should primarily be handled within Nigeria rather than through foreign legislative or judicial processes.
