The wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, has denied reports that she filed for divorce, describing the claims as false and unverified.
Okwu-Kanu, in a statement posted on her verified social media handle on Friday, said her attention had been drawn to false reports circulating online alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband, stating clearly that she has not filed for divorce and that the publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation.
She expressed concern that people continue to fabricate stories about her family without verification, adding that such falsehoods undermine responsible journalism.
Okwu-Kanu urged the public to rely only on information from her directly or through her authorised representatives, and thanked those who reached out to confirm the story before sharing it.
Kanu, who married Okwu-Kanu in 2009, is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction on t3rrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in November 2025.
He was found guilty on all seven counts and sentenced to life imprisonment on five of them, 20 years on one count, and five years on another, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The IPOB leader filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to overturn his conviction.
