Rainstorm kills four, destroys school, hospital in Sokoto

At least four people have been confirmed dead, with several others injured, following a devastating rainstorm that struck communities in Kware Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, also left hundreds of households affected, as strong winds and heavy rainfall destroyed homes and damaged critical public infrastructure, including a primary school and a hospital.

In response, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, carried out an assessment of the affected areas to determine the scale of destruction and the immediate needs of victims.

Communities impacted by the disaster include Mallamawa, Mai Mushe, Kaura, Sabon Gari, Rungin Tsamiya, and surrounding settlements.

According to NEMA’s preliminary findings, the storm displaced hundreds of families, with many houses either completely destroyed or severely damaged.

The agency also confirmed that several residents sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four fatalities were recorded.

NEMA stated that the assessment exercise is aimed at facilitating a timely emergency response and ensuring the provision of relief materials to those affected.

The agency added that it will continue to collaborate with state and local authorities to deliver humanitarian assistance and fully determine the extent of the damage.
