Senate Threatens South Africa Over Fresh Xenophobic Killings

Nigerian lawmakers, led by Senator Ningi, have warned that the country could review its diplomatic ties with South Africa unless the wave of xenophobic violence there comes to an end, following the killing of Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe on June 28 amid anti-migrant unrest.

The Senate stopped short of endorsing extreme measures such as the seizure of South African businesses in Nigeria, opting instead to urge the Foreign Ministry to press for safety guarantees, arrests, prosecutions and compensation for the victims.

Relevant committees have been tasked with reviewing past resolutions on the matter and are expected to report back within two weeks, as the lawmakers seek to balance the protection of Nigerian citizens abroad with the $2.16 billion in bilateral trade between both countries.

Reacting to comments by a South African minister that no compensation would be paid to Nigerians whose properties were lø øted or burnt, or whose lives were løst.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole told the Senate that Nigeria should respond in kind by appropriating the profits of South African companies operating in the country, including their banks, seizing the funds and using them to compensate the affected Nigerians.

He made the remarks while addressing the Senate over the xenophobic att@cks on Nigerians in South Africa.
